LAYING a foundation for the growth and development of children in an atmosphere of peace and compassion is a basic requirement for all societies, says Deputy Prime Minister Libertina Amathila.

Amathila was addressing students from the Cosmos and Delta high schools in Windhoek this week during a visit by the organiser of the first World Peace Tour Concert, to be hosted in Namibia on April 22 next year.


She said Government applauds the decision of the organisers to select Namibia as the first venue for such an important global music endeavour.

Music legends such as Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Cool and the Gang, Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion are expected to perform alongside popular and upcoming local artists. "We believe as Government that the concert will contribute toward spreading the message of peace, compassion and hope for children who are less privileged in the world, and who need social understanding and help to realise their full human potential," Amadhila said.

Amadhila added that Namibia was an appropriate venue for the concert because of its stable, peaceful, friendly and democratic environment.

"We are mindful of the extensive international attention this concert draws to the country, therefore we view the concert as yet another golden opportunity to showcase Namibian hospitality, warmth and talent."

Concert organiser Wolfgang Hildebrandt said he was excited about the concert and everybody wants to come on board.

"Every day we receive emails from Namibian artists wanting to take part in the concert, and we will be recording a theme song for the concert with the Namibian traditional group Ongombe, who will be flying to Los Angeles for the recordings," he said.

Meantime, the night before New Year’s Eve, on December 30, music superstars and romantic two-some, Jay Z and Beyonce will team for a once-in-a-lifetime special performance to celebrate the grand opening of his new 40/40 Club in the new Palazzo resort alongside the Venetian.

Jay-Z is already promising the biggest-ever one-night lineup of star power Vegas has ever experienced, with soccer supreme-o David Beckham and his Spice Girl wife, Victoria Beckham joined by such sports world headliners as Michael Jordan, Alex Rodriguez, Magic Johnson, Barry Bonds, Derek Jeter, Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O’Neal. Also expected from the record industry are VIPs Maria Carey, Rihanna, Alicia Keyes, Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupree, plus TV leaders Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart with Serena Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Beyonce, Elton John to perform at CBS event

Elton John, Beyonce and Carrie Underwood will headline "Movies Rock," a two-hour music-and-film event at the Kodak Theater on Dec. 2.
Show, put on by Conde Nast Media Group, the Producers Guild and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, will air Dec. 7 on CBS.

Beyonce will sing "Over the Rainbow," Underwood will perform "The Sound of Music," Fergie and Jennifer Hudson will pay tribute to Bond films with "Live and Let Die" and "Goldfinger," and John Legend and Mary J. Blige will sing "As Time Goes By."

John, who won an Oscar for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from "The Lion King," will honor music from animated movies, and John Williams will perform a medley from his original scores, which include "Jurassic Park" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

"We wanted to create an extraordinary show that would pay tribute to the indelible impact music has on film," said Richard Beckman, president of Conde Nast Media Group.

Beckman, PGA board members Kathleen Kennedy and Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer will serve as executive producers.

CBS has aired Conde Nast's "Fashion Rocks" for the past three seasons and will air it again in September.

"Movies Rock" will be supplemented by a magazine component, also called Movies Rock, which will be packaged with 14 December Conde Nast titles.

Publication will highlight stars, directors and musicians, and Bill Murray is the cover. Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter will serve as editorial director of the special issue, and Mitch Glazer will serve as editor.
