Re: Unexpected Album
HOUSTON - The crowd filled the doors of the concert center and snaked out into the night. Just inside, a vendor hurriedly arranged and rearranged T-shirts, glossy photos and sweat shirts picturing the star. In the darkened hall, robed choir members took their places as ushers stood guard at each entrance.
In a small room, a few lucky fans were in high spirits as they waited for a close encounter with the night's performer.
Then a door opened.
Patti, Patti, Patti, Patti, they gushed. Camera phones captured the moment. A little girl leapt toward the star and was rewarded with a warm embrace despite objections from a handler who ordered everyone back.
While Patti LaBelle may still be treated like an R&B superstar, on this night at Houston's St. Agnes Baptist Church she was about to become Sister Patti with a built-in amen corner.
After more than four decades in the music business, LaBelle has released her first gospel album, "The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle."
Early in the show, she plugged her gospel roots.
"I'm not coming back to gospel," she said. "I'm 62 years young. I've been singing gospel 45 years. So don't judge me. I'm not coming back to anything."
In a short interview before the concert, LaBelle said she started singing in the choir at Beulah Baptist Church in Philadelphia when she was about 12.
"Secular music paid the bills," she said of her long career.
LaBelle, who appeared as a nightclub singer in this summer's R-rated "Idlewild," said she has always included a few inspirational songs in her secular shows. A favorite is Donnie McClurkin's gospel song "Stand."
During the concert, she sang of being a child of the King, being washed in the blood, needing to pray and expecting to be reunited with departed family members in heaven.
"I just think God is using me and working on me to show people that gospel music is nothing to be afraid of," she said. "God is using me, and I'm so happy to be used like this."
LaBelle joins a long line of singers who gained fame and made a living selling secular music before wading into gospel waters. Others such as Al Green, Aretha Franklin and Earth, Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey have spent decades recording both secular and gospel music.
R&B singer Kelly Price, the daughter of preachers, recently released her first gospel album, "This Is Who I Am." A religious Christmas album came out in 2001.
Pastor Gregg Patrick said Price visited a Houston church several weeks ago and preached a message from the pulpit using a text of Scripture. Price told the congregation she had been rejected as a gospel singer by many churches because she sang secular music, Patrick said.
"Music is universal, and no one should be [excluded]," he said. "We should give people the opportunity to sing praise to God. They looked back at their roots and said, 'I'm still connected.' They have a message. They want to be able to minister, not just perform."
Jerma A. Jackson, author of "Singing in My Soul: Black Gospel Music in a Secular Age," said the church has historically offered singers with raw talent, particularly women, an opportunity to hone their skills.
"Gospel puts secular concerns into a religious context," said Jackson, associate professor of history at UNC-Chapel Hill.
"I think the boundaries are very fluid. Religious people have taken secular things and made them sacred, and secular people have taken sacred things and made them secular."
After releasing two gospel/inspirational projects, former Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams is in California working on a new R&B album. Williams, who has Pentecostal roots, said that when she started singing gospel, some gospel singers questioned her sincerity. She declined to name names.
"They just didn't know me," she said. "I was led to do these two CDs. Each meant something to me."
She said faith is part of her life. Her grandmother is an evangelist, her brother is a minister, and an uncle is a bishop in the Church of God in Christ. When Williams was on the road with Destiny's Child, Tina Knowles, mother of lead singer Beyonce, called the young women on Sunday mornings and have Bible study over the phone. They listened to gospel music before performances.
"Gospel music heals your soul," said Williams, who added that she may eventually focus her career in gospel.
She believes many R&B singers have a natural connection to gospel music.
"They haven't forgotten where they came from and that gospel music is still a part of them," Williams said. "With some people like Patti LaBelle and Aretha, you hear it in their voice. You know they were raised in the church."
Before the concert at St. Agnes Baptist, LaBelle acknowledged that she does not often get to church services.
"I don't have to go to a building," she said. "God is with me every day. I am the building. I was born with the church in me."
About 4,600 people turned out at St. Agnes, a sprawling campus in southeast Houston called Dome City for its domed sanctuary. LaBelle took the stage in an elegant black gown with a diamond-studded necklace. On one rousing number she was joined by Houston gospel artist Yolanda Adams, who is featured on the new CD.
Fans Jasmine Quinerly and Mazelle Hughes didn't object to LaBelle's crossover. Quinerly believes that if more R&B singers would profess their faith in their music, it could influence the industry.
"They could bring a moral standard to R&B," said Quinerly, a minister in training.
"Who said you had to be one or the other? God can work through anything," added Hughes, a hospital chaplain.
Richard Picart, senior executive of Gospelcity.com, a Web site that promotes black gospel music, said while stars' names may give them an opportunity to be heard, the faithful will judge the authenticity of their message.
By performing gospel, the artists are showing another side of themselves while witnessing to the traditional churchgoer and to people who don't regularly attend church, he said.
"There has to be a sense of integrity or it doesn't work," Picart said. "For some people who don't know who Shirley Caesar is, Kelly Price is a gateway for them to hear the word of the Creator. If they are artistic, it's going to come out at some point."
