INTERVIEW
Michelle Williams of defunkt Destiny's Child, who appears on the soundtrack to the 70’s disco-skating movie "Roll Bounce," recently directed some cutting words at today's R&B industry which she thinks has fallen off in terms of putting out quality music. (audio interview below)
Via telephone, the Christian-raised Grammy-winner told hiphoprnbsoul.com that some of the R&B music selling today is "junk."
"There are so many people in this industry who can sing their butts off," she said, "who do positive music... soul music... but what is selling right now, I honestly can say, it's junk. I can't even relate to half the stuff that's out here. As far as our generation, we don't have those songs like Al Green, "Let's Stay Together" and Isley Brothers, "Living For The Love Of You."
On the soundtrack, Williams performs a Jazze Pha-produced cover of the aforementioned classic song from Al Green.
Williams also commented on the firestorm of criticism that followed the group's performance at the BET Awards of what the media referred to as "lapdances."
The singer says people are still blowing the whole thing out of proportion.
"For some reason people want to pick on Destiny's Child when there are so many other people that you can talk about," the 25 year-old said. "I don't understand it. I think we've been tasteful. We did not do a lap dance and the more technical term for what we did was called a pas de deux."
Back in June, the trio announced they would disband this month and put an end to their reign as one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. Since then, many have said the unexpected move was a publicity stunt.
"We really don't like playing games with people," Williams revealed. "We've been honest and women of our word. People thought this was definitely a publicity stunt... we are all much older and honestly our destiny has been fulfilled as far as Destiny's Child is concerned. Now. Who's to say five ten years from now we won't get back together and say lets do a record or lets do another tour."
According to the rockford, Illinois resident, rumors of the women disbanding due to lead singer Beyonce commanding the lion's share of the publiicty and attention are just not true.
We are still the best of friends. I just talked to Kelly the other day and we're trying to schedule a vacation. We're all trying to get out of here and get some sun in. Combined we've sold 50 million records and I think that that's an amazing, amazing, amazing task that we've completed."
Voilà!
